Immortal jelly fish:
Does it really live forever?
Immortal life is dream of many people from
past to present. In the past, our ancestor tried to find way to be immortal,
such as perform alchemy, but now we use science to make it nearly realism.
Many people want to have immortal life, but
who know there has one on our world. . .
This creature is in the same type of
jellyfish.
Jelly fish is in phylum Cnidaria. They are
typified as free-swimming marine animals consisting of a gelatinous
umbrella-shaped bell and trailing tentacles. The bell can pulsate for
locomotion, while stinging tentacles can be used to capture prey, such as small
fish.
Jellyfish are found in every ocean, from
the surface to the deep sea, but some of them live in freshwater.
This immortal creature, known
scientifically as Turritopsis nutricula, was discovered in the
Mediterranean Sea. More people know them in name
“immortal jellyfish”.
Generally, jellyfish must die after their breeding, but not for this immortal jellyfish.
Scientists observe its ability for a long
time and they found that when immortal jellyfish is going to died, Its cells
will revert their earliest form and grow anew by attaches itself to a surface
in warm ocean waters and converts into a blob.
This is made scientist assume that it can
be immortal. . .
This picture shows the cycle of life of
immortal jellyfish.
At the top of picture show an injured medusa sinks to the ocean floor.
On the right hand side show its body folds on itself and reabsorbed.
At the bottom show rootlike stolons lengthen and become polyp (larva).
On the left side Show the new polyp produces a medusa.
There some scientists who think that
immortal of this species will make the environment lose equilibrium,
so it is impossible that it can be immortal, but the scientist argue that
although the immortal jellyfish can revert when they are nearly to die but it
can’t revert if they are eaten by predators.
The small size of this jellyfish was made
them easy to be prays for predators in the ocean. Immortal jellyfish has
4mm-5mm long, so it easy to hunt for predators. Although the immortal jelly fish
has nematocyst, but because of their small size and a
little volume of toxin protect them just only some species of predators.
Expect death from predators, the immortal
jellyfish can died by many cause include tissue for revert is injurious, sick
when temperature or condition is not appropriate and destroyed while be
polyp (first step for be jellyfish).
This show that although immortal jellyfish can revert and grow anew, when
they nearly to die after breed didn’t mean that they will never die by other
things.
Nowadays scientists are studying about immortal jellyfish closely, with
the hopes of applying what they learn to issues such as human aging and
illness.
