You Need Eight Hours of Sleep Per
Day
Have you used to think 'sleep is wasting time'? If we try to calculate, we will find
that many people spend 36% of their time to sleep. Thus,
if your average life span is 74-year-old (according to Thai
average life span), you will spend time about 27 years for
sleeping.
A lot
of people thought that they should reduce their sleep time and spend more time
to do their tasks or works. Mana Ionescu, Lightspan digital's president and
resident problem solver, is the one who used to think she should decrease her
time to sleep. She thought she would
have more time to work. However, lack of sleep caused her a car accident. She had
to spend a lot of time for her discovery.
David Volpi, an expert about sleep, explained ‘generally, adults require time to sleep about
8 hours per night’. A lot of people might hear something like this. Moreover, some people
believe 8 hours is good for their health. But do you have a doubt why 8-hour
of sleep and is it the best choice?
First, I made an experiment that I tested with myself. The sleep experiment
was designed according to my sleep schedule 0-12 hours, and had factors control, for example reading before
sleep, not using social network and sleeping at 12 P.M.
Then,
let’s sleep!
The
result showed after slept 0-4 hours. Firstly, I felt vigorous and active. Then I
became tired, drowsy and not being able to concentrate
5
hours: quite sleepy but able to study and think
6-7
hours: active and didn’t feel sleepy
8-9
hours: had a little headache but able to study
9-12
hours: had a headache and tired, unable to study.
Thus,
sleep about 6-7 hours stimulated more helped my ability to think. However, the
result depends on age of each person. Each age has quite different health requirement. Adults may require more sleep time than youth. Thus, 6-7 hours is enough for me.
There
is the research about sleep by Daniel F. Kripke, an emeritus professor of
psychiatry at the University of California San Diego. It showed people who
reported that they slept for 6.5 to 7.4 hours
had a lower mortality rate than those with shorter or longer sleep. In another research,
published in the journal Sleep Medicine in 2011, the
researchers recorded the sleep activity of about 450 elderly
women. Some 10 years later, the researchers found that
those who slept fewer than five hours or more than 6.5 hours
had a higher mortality.
Many
studies has shown us people who slept about 6.5 hours had a lower mortality rate. They
can also function with 6.5 hours. Moreover, Daniel F. Kripke also found that ‘people who sleep between 6.5 hours and 7.5 hours a night, live the longest, arehappier, and most productive than others'.
Now,
do you still think we need eight hours of sleep per day?
