Why the dog
can’t eat chocolate?
There are many foods that human can
eat like a fish, vegetable and snack. Some of you share your food to your pets
like dogs or cats, but some of our foods can’t feed the pets because they will
die. Some of our foods cause toxic reactions in dogs because they can’t digest.
The chocolate is a dangerous food for pets because it’s poisonous.
By toxic, it means very toxic that
the pet can get ill coma and death. This
confuses you that just chocolate
can cause many poisons. I think you want
to know what makes chocolate products toxic. Chocolate is made from Cocoa, milk
and oil. Cocoa beans have a compound called theobromine that has similar chemical
structure to caffeine. Theobromine can mess up the balance in the body. It can
inhibit components of central nervous system (CNS) that is adenosine receptors. It increases
calcium levels in the cells. It has an important chemical in the body called
cAMP that will affect processes in the body such as CNS and heart contraction. It appears only in
the animal that can’t digest theobromine because human have different digestive
system that they can digest the chocolate.
This picture shows about the
chemical structure of theobromine and caffeine.
The darker chocolate is more
dangerous for your pet. It
has more theobromine than the
lighter one. It can compared with cooking chocolate inside milk chocolate or
dark chocolate. Dark chocolate has more cooking chocolate because milk
chocolate has more milk and oil than dark chocolate, so dark chocolate has more
theobromine than milk chocolate. We can calculate how much chocolate can kill
the dog. For instance, about 25g of cooking chocolate is a poison for a 20-kg
dog. This story tells us that if a little dog eat
chocolate, it can die easier than a big dog. So many
people have a question that how come humans can eat chocolates? The
answer is human can quickly and sefely digest theobromine. It isn’t large
enough to cause the problems. We use enzyme cytochrome P450 in the liver. For
pets, metabolizing theobromine digests much slower than human.
Chocolate is not only food that pets
can’t eat. Fruits of vine such as grapes, raisins and sultans are poisonous too.
Your pet can get kidney failure if they eat only 2.8mg/kg of raisins. Onions,
garlic, leeks and chives in any form (raw, cooked or dried) are poisonous too.
Finally ,we know that as a pet owner
,you want to give your pets good things and foods, but you should study about
what your pet can eat. Your pet will be saved from a dangerous food.
